The "arrogance and high-handedness" of Skibo Castle estate owner Peter de Savary in building a big wooden bothy near their public water supply have provoked within three days 300 people in Creich and Kincardine to sign a petition of objection. The construction of the bothy on a remote site high above Bonar Bridge went ahead without local authority consent.

The tiny post office at Altnaharra will close next Thursday, July 3, if no one willing to run the service is found, Post Office chiefs have warned. Widespread advertising has failed to unearth anyone interested in taking over the remote sub post office. The present sub postmistress Lesley Wilkie is due to leave the area.

A BONAR BRIDGE woman was this week celebrating a win of £500 - every month, for the rest of her life! Audrey Calder (37) won the jackpot, which has the potential to be worth up to a quarter of a million pounds, on a Littlewoods Lotteries scratchcard she bought at the local Post Office.

A BOY with a broken arm played a notable part in rescuing a 22-year-old fish buyer who had fallen into Helmsdale harbour last Friday night. The boy was William Innes, of Dunrobin Street, Helmsdale, and the fish buyer was Mr Jim Cowie, of Marwil, Brora, who said he had been fortunate not to lose consciousness after falling from an ice lorry, hitting his head on the edge of the pier and then striking the boat which he had been supplying before landing in the water. Young William saw him falling and threw him a rope.

Sutherland's first ever public swimming pool, costing £108,000, will be officially opened at Golspie on Monday by Mr Donald McBain, convener of the county council.

Two sisters, Rosemary (12) and Margaret (15), daughters of Mr and Mrs David Coghill, 17 Johnstone Place, Brora, were presented with their Queen's Guide certificates at a ceremony in the Scout and Guide Hall last Friday night. They are members of the 2nd Brora Girl Guide Company.

An interesting function will take place in the United Free Church, Dornoch, on Thursday evening next, the 29th inst., when the Very Rev A. Philip, the ex-moderator will unveil a memorial tablet to the men belonging to the congregation who fell in the Great War. The tablet, we understand, is of a very pleasing design and effectively combines a memorial to the fallen with a roll of honour for the survivors who served with the forces.

The members of the Clyne Parish Church choir, minister, and kirk session waited upon Miss M. L Williams, their organist for the past two years, and presented her, on the 8th June, with a tea service, metal tray, coal scuttle and oak tray on the occasion of her approaching marriage.

Several large turbot were landed by local fishermen at Helmsdale harbour last week. Crabs and lobsters are plentiful and good prices are being realised. Several young men have left the village for the Shetland herring fishing and, to date, have done well.
