The deepening and widening of the entrance channel of Kinlochbervie harbour is now complete and the reaction from local fishermen is that it was money well spent. The £710,000 project has widened the entrance channel to 25 metres, and the dredging has ensured that it is the same depth all the way across.

The Forestry Commission this week defended the out-of-season shooting of several hundred deer in the Dornoch Forest District, including many pregnant hinds, as being necessary to reduce their abnormally high numbers and protect young trees. Critics have condemned the cull as "indiscriminate mass slaughter".

Millionaire Peter de Savary has made an undisclosed out-of-court settlement to a Dornoch man who was sacked after helping build his world-class golf course at Skibo Castle. An industrial tribunal was cancelled after a cash settlement was reached between flamboyant Mr de Savary and his former greenkeeper Leslie Mackay (29).

Provost Harry Clunie last Tuesday expressed anxiety about the possible effects on the East Sutherland tourist trade, and particularly on Dornoch and Embo, by the Ministry of Defence’s plan to establish a gunnery range on the Morich Moore, near Tain. He said it was acknowledged that holidaymakers went to Dornoch for peace and quiet.

Sutherland County Council want to build an 18ft wide, 600 yard road for traffic going to the holiday caravan park at Embo and so bypass the village. At the moment there is a considerable traffic hazard with the growing volume of caravans each year being forced to go to the park by way of the village’s narrow main street.

Sutherland Education Committee were told at Lairg last week that 104 parents had signed a petition asking for the local school to be upgraded to “O” level or four-year secondary. The committee agreed to review their secondary school policy and fully consult the parents concerned.

A RATHER serious accident occurred on Sunday evening to Mr and Mrs Horne and family, Stafford Terrace, Brora, when on a visit to Mrs Bremner, Little Kintradwell. They were departing for home in a trap, in charge of Mr A. Maclachlan, who, with Mr Horne, were leading the horse down the steep incline from the farm to the road, when the horse bolted. The trap was overturned and the occupants were thrown out. They were removed home by car and Dr Johnstone was soon in attendance to find that Mrs Horne suffered from a broken collar bone and her son, George, had his arm dislocated. The other occupants escaped serious injury but suffered from shock.

The net fishings at Bonar Bridge were commenced on a limited scale on 2nd inst. Nothwithstanding the cold, wintry, boisterous weather, the hauls of salmon have been above the average in productiveness so early in the season. Fully half a ton of salmon has been consigned to markets in the south.
