Members of Dornoch Heritage Society are keen to ensure that the Russian who has become Baron of Skelbo will restore the ruined manor house – unlike the previous owner who, they say, let it crumble into complete disrepair. But Mr Michael Alexander, who sold the crumbling 15th century house and 12th century castle walls to Mr Mikhail Debouar of Moscow, contends he is also keen that the rich businessman, said to be a friend of Russian president Boris Yeltsin, becomes involved in the restoration of the historic site.

Crofters in Strathy, Baligill and Armadale took the first step towards deciding whether or not to become landlords of the Armadale estate when Strathy Point grazings committee asked the Crofting Trusts Advisory Service (CTAS) to meet tenants and answer some of the questions that have vexed them since Scottish Secretary Michael Forsyth offered to hand over the Government's crofting estate. Sutherland County Council decided, at Dornoch last Monday, to keep up the pressure in the fight to retain the 12-mile fishing limit as a condition of Britain’s entering the Common Market. The Government is negotiating a six-mile limit. Mr J. B. Rodger, county clerk, said that he had contacted all the county conveners and they all supported Sutherland’s position. They all agreed that MPs, the Government and all other relevant bodies should be left in no doubt about the north’s wish that the 12-mile limit be retained.

A PURE-BRED King Charles spaniel puppy was the centre of attraction at a presentation ceremony in Golspie High School last Friday night. It was a surprise gift for Miss Agnes P. Macleod, of Helmsdale, the school’s principal mathematics teacher, who is retiring after 20 years’ service in Golspie. The staff had known that Miss Macleod had wanted such a puppy, but their intentions had been kept a very close secret, and so the pleasure for Miss Macleod was all the greater.

Playing an iron shot, the ball rebounded with great impetus from a stone and struck him on the left eye. The impact stunned him for a considerable time. He was conveyed by motor car to the Lawson Memorial Hospital, where his injuries were promptly attended to by Dr J. B. Simpson. The accident is more serious than at first thought.

HM Inspector's report on the Rhilochan School, Rogart. was an all-round excellent one and, as the HM Inspector pointed out, reflects great crediton the teacher (Miss Mackenzie). The report on the Rogart P.S. is also very creditable. Strathbrora school shows a marked improvement.
