25 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of December 25, 1998

Fears were voiced this week that the health of Kinlochbervie residents - and children in particular - might be at risk from an electromagnetic field associated with a new transmission mast in the village. The main purpose of the mast, erected on a hill above Inchard Place, is to improve television reception. However, it can also be used for the transmission of mobile phone signals and this is what is causing concern. The local community council is urgently looking into the matter.

The Royal Burgh of Dornoch could be featured on the World Wide Web by the end of January. Behind the move to give the town its own Internet website is the Dornoch Focus Group. They believe that, with so many households now online, it is essential to be represented on the electronic highway.

The issue of bringing Dornoch Academy – Scotland's first self-governing school – back into local government control is set to surface again early in the New Year. Talks have been held over the last two months.

50 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of December 21, 1973

In between snow showers Mr Gordon Campbell, Secretary of State for Scotland formally opened the new bridge at Bonar last Friday, the third to be built over the Kyle of Sutherland in 110 years and which cost £450,000. Introduced by Mr Donald McBain, convener of Sutherland, Mr Campbell unveiled a triangular stone cairn erected on the east abutment on which was recorded the history of the three bridges.

With certain reservations, Sutherland Planning Committee are prepared to grant full consent to the developers who want to build an oil field equipment production yard at Inverbrora, just south of the village of Brora. The developers are Canpet Operations International Ltd., of Canada.

A SUDDEN thaw brought threats of flooding after the heavy snowfall, with severe drifting in East Sutherland, on Wednesday. So deep were the drifts that snowploughs were often helpless in their efforts to clear the roads and rescue marooned motorists.

100 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of December 20, 1923

The Scottish Board of Health has approved of the appointment of Mr Geo. Calder, Dornoch, as sanitary inspector for the county of Sutherland. Considered as essential in connection with the carrying out of his duties, the purchase of a cycle for the sanitary inspector was sanctioned.

The Shell-Mex, Limited, made application to Sutherland County Council to be allowed to erect road caution signs in certain villages in the county. The Council looked upon the erection of such signs as advertisements, and not as road caution signs at all, and refused to grant the request.

Sutherland County Council at its statutory meeting in the Sutherland Arms Hotel, Lairg, agreed to make an application to the Scottish Automobile Club for a grant towards the purchase price of a boat for the Meikleferry. Mr Adam Couper, Helmsdale representative, had forward a model of a boat that would suit the ferry. The model was favourably commented on.
