Four Sutherland museums on the map of Highland attractions to explore for families this summer as part of Museums Galleries Scotland initiative

SUTHERLAND culture spots are among some of the best family-friendly activities in the Highlands suggested by a national museum body.

Museums Galleries Scotland have included four Sutherland museums as part of their interactive #MuseumsAreGo map to encourage cultural visits.

They are: Dunrobin Castle Museum; Brora Heritage Centre; Timespan Museum and Arts Centre in Helmsdlae; and Historylinks Museum, Dornoch.

The initiative highlights lesser-explored museums and galleries in the Highlands and the north of Scotland, offering all generations an insight into the area’s local history.

Lucy Casot, CEO of Museums Galleries Scotland said: “With budgets stretched this year we are pleased that incredible museums and galleries across the country will open their doors for everyone to explore with a range of low-cost activities, trails and experiences. Throughout Scotland there is a museum or gallery on your doorstep, waiting for you to explore history, art and a wide range of activities and events to enjoy. We hope everyone will try something new this summer that is local and accessible for all.”

Among the other visits suggested was Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, which explores the art, history and heritage of the Highlands with 100 years of Highland Rugby, 1000-year-old Viking treasure and a river monster kids safari all in the centre of town

The River Findhorn Heritage Centre at Logie Steading near Forres and the North Coast Visitor Centre in Thurso are also on the map.
