The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said that while operations throughout the UK are being kept under review, it is unlikely that soldiers from the Highlands will be deployed to Afghanistan, as the 3 Scots regiment has recently returned from the country.

Earlier today, it was understood that Fort George had been put into "high readiness" a term used for those who are about to be deployed.

But a spokesman for the MoD confirmed this evening that it was unlikely the regiment would be deployed.

An MoD spokesman said: "All UK operations are kept under review to ensure flexibility and effectiveness, including the deployment of personnel across the world.

“For reasons of operational security, we will not provide a running commentary on the movements of UK Armed Forces Personnel."
