A former factor of Sutherland Estates has died in a car accident in Dumfries and Galloway.

Michael Scott (82), of Gatehouse of Fleet, was killed when his car ran off the road on the A75 Dumfries to Stranraer road near Twynholm.

With him in the car were his two beloved 11-year-old labradors, who also died.

Mr Scott was factor in Golspie from 1959 to 1976, living firstly at Littleferry and then moving to Tower Lodge.

Both he and his then wife Janet were well known figures in Golspie – she ran the Highland Welcome gift shop and stationers, where the present newsagents is.

Although the family moved to Lincolnshire in 1976 – he became land agent for the Marquis of Exeter at Burghley Estate – he maintained a great love for Golspie, keeping the log cabin at Backies which he had built in 1974.

The family return there regularly.

The couple had four children while they lived in Golspie – Claire (51), David (49), Serena (46) and Mark (40).

David told the Northern Times: "Dad had very fond memories of his time in Golspie and returned regularly to the log cabin, a spot he loved. We love it too, and will continue to look forward to holidaying there."

Mr Scott’s funeral service will take place in Gatehouse of Fleet Parish Church on Monday at 2pm, followed by a private interment.
