Food bank use rises by nearly a quarter

End of year figures from the Trussell Trust show an increase in food bank use in Scotland.
This includes 5253 three-day emergency food supplies being given to people in crisis in Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross between April 2018 and March this year.
Scotland as a whole has seen an increase of 23.4 per cent in these emergency food supplies in the last year.
Far north MP Jamie Stone said: “Nobody should be forced to use food banks in Britain. If these latest figures are not a wakeup call to Theresa May about how unworkable Universal Credit is, then I don’t know what is.
“The Government has a duty to look after the most vulnerable in society, not drive them to food banks. If the Chancellor really is serious about ending austerity, then he should take note and fix this mess. Actions speak louder than words.
“Instead of standing by their flagship policy, the Tories must pause the roll out immediately and take action to fix it. My Liberal Democrat colleagues and I will continue to do all that we can to press them to do this in Parliament.”
