The Helmsdale is not the only Sutherland river set to open within the next few days - the Naver opens on Monday.

Events at Helmsdale kick off at around 9.30am when Sutherland Schools Pipe Band will tune up.

Findlay will then be piped down to to the river.

Central to the event is Glencoast - the fishing tackle, outdoor and country outlet on Helmsdale’s Dunrobin Street.

Ice and Fire Distillery– a small craft distillery based at Smerral, Latheronwheel, is holding a pop-up gin tasting from 3pm-5pm at Glencoast.

The traditional free fishing at the opening of the Helmsdale salmon season has once again been extended by Helmsdale River Board.

The Helmsdale, which flows from Loch Badanloch down the Strath of Kildonan, is one of Sutherland’s major rivers.

Last season saw “reasonable” catches recorded, according to the river board’s website.

A ceremony will also be held at the Naver to mark its official opening.
