A public consultation event in Wick next week will allow local people to share their thoughts on a proposed new offshore wind farm and help shape its early development, according to those behind the project.

The 2GW Caledonia wind farm is being developed by Ocean Winds in the Moray Firth, to the east of the Beatrice, Moray West and Moray East sites, and could have as many as 150 turbines.

The first major public document for the project, the offshore scoping report, was submitted to Marine Scotland in October.

The report outlines the technologies under consideration for developing the site. It also details the work that will be carried out for the environmental impact assessment that will support the planning application for the project, expected to be made in 2024.

Consultation events are being held to gather feedback from the coastal communities nearest the project.

The Wick session is in Mackays Hotel on Monday (November 7), from noon to 8pm. Similar events will be held in Fraserburgh on Wednesday and Buckie on Thursday.

A virtual consultation is also available to those unable to attend the events. Feedback can be provided at https://caledonia.virtual-engage.com

Caledonia project director Mark Baxter said: “The submission of the scoping report marks an important early milestone for the Caledonia Offshore wind farm. As the first major public document submitted for the project, these consultation events provide a great opportunity for local people to share their thoughts and help shape the early development of the wind farm.

“Ocean Winds has extensive knowledge, experience and relationships in the Moray Firth, and we look forward to engaging with the individuals, organisations and communities who have an interest in the project.”

Once fully commissioned, it is expected that Caledonia will double the Moray Firth’s ability to supply low-cost, low-carbon electricity. It is expected to start generation in 2030.

Ocean Winds, which has its headquarters in Madrid, is the result of a 50-50 joint venture by EDP Renewables and Engie.
