A family who have embarked on a fundraising challenge to travel the entire coast of the UK in a vintage camper van while surviving on £10 a day, have arrived in Sutherland.

The Chick family from Sussex hope their Round the UK on a Tenner a Day initiative will raise at least £49,000 for a youth charity operating in their home area.

Mum and dad Dave and Jem and their children Grace (15), Evan (13) and Irys (11), who are home schooled, crossed the county line into East Sutherland yesterday heading north.

Their mode of transport is a 1968 Morris Traveller van which they have nicknamed Mo. The vehicle was built by Dave and his young son over about a year.

They are one month into the 900-mile challenge which it is estimated will take around eight months to completed.

Along the way they are keen to meet local people who are working to improve their communities and are using social media to make contact.

Mum Jem said the family were managing to keep within the £10 daily limit.

"We have £5 a day for fuel and £5 for food," she said. We can do about 30 miles per day and we are eating a lot of pasta, soups and stews!"
