It is the second incident of its type that the unit has been called out to in recent weeks.

A post on the unit's Facebook page stated: "This time it was the beautiful Torrisdale beach at Skerray. Thankfully everyone in the vehicle was safe and well."

Coastguards from Melness joined colleagues from Melvich, Durness and Scrabster earlier this month to go to the rescue of a a driver of the dune buggy, who is understood to have sustained an injury negotiating a stretch of the same beach.

Facebook users have been quick to condemn the vehicle driver in the latest incident.

One posted: "Anyone stupid enough to drive on to the beach should be charged the full cost of recovery with no insurance!"

Another wrote: "Unbelievable."
