Exhibition showcases Sutherland's SWI talent

Members of the Sutherland Federation of the SWI proved their skill at needlecraft at their biannual exhibition of work at Rogart Hall.

On display were exquisite examples of embroidery, knitting, crochet, lace, cross-stitch and quilting work as well as flower arranging, photography and other creative arts .

The various classes were judged by a four strong team of SWI members from Caithness institutes and the exhibition opened to the public in the afternoon when the prizes were presented.

At the end of the day federation chairwoman Jean Cameron offered a vote of thanks to all who had helped with the event.

The Sutherland Federation comprises six institutes but numbers are dropping and more members would be welcome.

Eileen Duchess of Sutherland Rose Bowl (institute with most overall points) - Golspie; Sinclair Cup (restricted to four smallest institutes, most points overall) - Rogart; Alford Trophy (institute highest average mark per member) - Rogart; Forbes-Proctor Trophy (member with most points) - Maureen Ritchie, Golspie; Calder Trophy (most points embroidery) - Betty Mackay, Rogart; Clashmore Tray (most points embroidery and sewing) - Betty Mackay; Carnegie Cup (most points knitting) - Margaret Macdonald, Brora; Violet Sutherland Trophy (most points crochet and lace) - June Hoyle, Clashmore; Stewart Fitzroy Cup (winning institute of cooperative section) - Dornoch; McCrostie Cup (runner-up in cooperative section) - Golspie; Christine M Johnstone Rose Bowl ( most points flower arranging) - Betty Mackay; Macdonald Embroidery (best in show exhibit) - June Hoyle, Clashmore; Mary Fielding Picture (most points arts and crafts) - Betty Mackay; W J Cameron Tray (most points thrift ) - Betty Mackay.
