A training course for people who want to become a marine mammal medic is being held in Lochinver in July.

The course at Loch Clash Pier on Saturday, July 13, is being run by the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR), a UK-based marine animal rescue organisation.

It consists of online lectures to be viewed prior to the course date followed by a day of practical training using BDMLR’s life-sized whale, dolphin and seal models.

Wetsuits/drysuits, gloves and boots are required as well as a packed lunch.

Those who complete the course will receive a year’s third party medic insurance as well as a Medic ID card, a certificate, handbook, and year’s subscription to BDMLR.

Donna Hopton, the BDMLR area coordinator for Wester Ross and the north-west said she was keen for people to sign up for the course.

“We currently have no medics between Lochinver and Durness, and we would really like people to join our team,” she said.

“You don’t have to be a diver. In fact, you don’t need any experience or qualifications at all - just a passion for helping marine wildlife.”
