'Ever-growing' butcher and wholesale demand prompts appeal at Dingwall Mart

AN "ever-growing" butcher and wholesale clientele in Dingwall is pushing demand at the town's auction mart.

At the sale on Tuesday, Dingwall and Highland Marts sold 874 sheep and 10 cattle.

The verdict on the prime cattle sale was: "A plainer show for quality was forward this week but, nevertheless, all classes cashed in at increased values on the week.

"The butcher and wholesale clientele is ever-growing here in Dingwall and more are needed to satisfy this demand”.

Prime bullocks (1) averaged 292.0p per kg (+3.9p) and sold to 292.0p per kg and £1,795.80 gross for a 615kg Limousin cross from Bridgend Farm, Dingwall selling to Messrs John M Munro Ltd, Dingwall.

Prime heifers (9) averaged 294.1p per kg (+7.4p) and sold to 300.0p per kg for a 595kg Charollais cross from Shoreton Farms, Culbokie and £1,985.60 gross for a 680kg Charollais cross from Bridgend Farm, Dingwall.

SQQ lambs 25.5kg to 45.5kg (532) averaged 269.2p (+8.8p).

Feeding sheep (100) sold to £150 gross.

Old Season Lambs (774) averaged 268.4p (+10.9p) and sold to 308.0p per kg for a 47.5kg Texel cross from 28 Skelbo Muir, Dornoch and £152 gross for a pen of 65kg Texel crosses from 5c Balnabeen, Conon Bridge.

SQQ Lambs 25.5kg to 45.5kg (532) averaged 269.2p (+8.8p).

Feeding Sheep (100) sold to £150 gross for a Texel wedder from 28 Skelbo Muir, Dornoch.

The verdict: “A smaller show of hoggs forward cashed in at dearer rates for a show severely lacking in meat. Anything carrying flesh met an animated enquiry and many more of this commodity could be sold. The ewe ring carried on the lean theme this week. Power was severely lacking however all classes would be a fraction sharper”.
