East Sutherland Rescue Association (ESRA) has had its first night-time call-out since opening its new lifeboat station.

The rescue service was called out at just after midnight last night to go to the aid of a suspected casualty at Tarbet Ness, near Portmahomack.

ESRA is an independent, volunteer service that relies on donations and fundraising.

The lifeboat Glen Cassley was launched 25 minutes later and took off at speed to the location.

ESRA spokesman Antony Hope said: “Aberdeen Coastguard stood ESRA down at 1am as the casualty was in the capable hands of the emergency services.

“This was ESRA’s first call-out in the dark from the new lifeboat station. We are pleased to say that both launch and recovery of the Dornoch lifeboat went smoothly."

The new, £500,000 lifeboat station has been operational for some weeks but was officially opened on August 14 by Lord Cadogan, who contributed to its development.
