Porridge fans have less than four weeks left to confirm their interest in the 2021 World Porridge Making Championships, which will run in a virtual format for a second consecutive year.

Competitors are invited to submit a video of themselves making their favourite oaty dish, with the winning videos and the ‘Virtual Spurtler’ being announced in a video reveal online on World Porridge Day - October 10.

Recipes and entry forms should be submitted by June 30 and videos should be submitted by August 15.

The organisers have had interest from food bloggers, chefs and porridge fans from all over the world, and are looking forward to another smorgasbord of entries, showcasing the versatility of oatmeal in both sweet and savoury dishes.

Last year’s winner was Chris Young from Crieff in Perthshire, who wowed the judges with his Crunch sa Bheul, a Scottish take on the French desert croquembouche, with pastry puffs made with oatflour, sugar and butter, piped with cream and dipped in caramel.

Other dishes in the top 10 included a fruity ‘Porridge of Hope’, a duck confit taco, pina colada porridge and blueberry cheesecake porridge.

To enter, competitors should film themselves making their favourite sweet or savoury dish containing oatmeal. The organisers are keen to stress that they aren’t looking for professional cookery videos – good quality mobile phone footage is perfectly good, however videos should be a maximum of five minutes.

The dishes will be scored on five criteria - appearance, execution, originality, flair and virtual taste, reflecting which dishes the judging panel most wanted to try.

The ten winning recipes will be announced in a day-long video reveal on the Golden Spurtle Facebook page. The ten finalists will each receive a Perfect Porridge pack from the competition sponsors, Hamlyns of Scotland.

Charlie Miller from Carrbridge Community Council who organise the competition said: “The World Porridge Making Championships is one of the highlights of Scotland’s food and drink calendar, so we’re delighted to be able to keep the competition alive. It’s great to see that even while we have to rely on a virtual format, the event continues to attract interest from porridge fans from all over the world.”
