An Embo resident was so drunk at the wheel of his car that he burst two tyres as he weaved about the road.

Members of the public were so concerned about 55 year old Nigel Whitham's driving, they contacted the police.

When officers arrived in Dornoch's High Street, they found Whitham outside his vehicle being unsteady on his feet and with the worried witnesses waiting with him.

Whitham of Phimister Crescent appeared from custody at Inverness Sheriff Court today and admitted driving while almost six times above the legal limit yesterday.

His reading was 121mcgs of alcohol, when the permitted maximum is 22mcgs,

Fiscal depute Robert Weir asked Sheriff Margaret Neilson to consider forfeiting Whitham's Peugeot.

Sheriff Neilson agreed and seized the car in the meantime. She also deferred sentence until October 12 for a background report, released Whitham on bail and disqualified him from driving in the interim.

The court heard Whitham was driving to a shop in Dornoch to buy cigarettes and more alcohol.

He was seen to be swerving round corners, weaving from lane to lane and hitting kerbs, which caused the punctures.

Whitham completed his journey on the rims of his alloy wheels, Mr Weir said.
