The Dornoch Community Award for 2023 has been presented to Embo community stalwart and veteran fundraiser William Hamilton.

Dornoch Area Community Council introduced the award in 2020 as a way of recognising individuals who have voluntarily served for years in various capacities for the benefit of the area.

Community council chairman Patrick Murray said Mr Hamilton was a well-deserved recipient of the accolade.

He said: “Having overcome a serious illness at a young age which very nearly cost him his life, William has always put others before himself.

“He was instrumental in the early success of the community shop at Embo and was out in all weathers, making sure that elderly and vulnerable residents had the essentials they needed.

“He helped organise rotas, stocked the shop, dealt with suppliers, and communicated via social media. He organised pensioners’ Christmas hampers and gifts for local children, as well as many other things.

“William has also served with Embo Trust and on Dornoch Area Community Council. He is also very involved with the football club.”

Mr Hamilton has also raised thousands of pounds for two causes very close to his heart, Macmillan Nurses and the Beatson Cancer Charity.

Every year he holds coffee mornings, sales of work, raffles and other events in aid of the two charities.

Mr Murray continued: “William is the epitome of what community help is all about. He is a throwback to the old Embo way, a way of always putting others before himself, in everything he does!”

Previous recipients of the award have been Michael Banks (2020); Willie Fraser (2021); and Marian Swanson (2022).
