East Sutherland Wheelers present 'inspiring' NC500 fundraising cyclist Ben Hallam with Outstanding Achievement Award

Local cycling club East Sutherland Wheelers presented its annual club prizes at its recent AGM.

A belated Outstanding Achievement Award was also presented to club member Ben Hallam in recognition of his inspiring, non-stop cycle ride round tourism route NC500 in 2021.

Ben undertook the gruelling challenge in aid of the charity Reverse Rett, which funds research aimed at finding a cure for the rare neurological disorder.

He made it round the 516-mile route in a total time of 41 hours, eight minutes – his cycling time was 35 hours, seven minutes.

Richard Sutherland, Brora, won the club’s overall 10-mile time trial championship, while Audrey Scott from Tain won the ladies' championship, women’s scratch and the 25-mile time trial event.

Junior champion was Brogar Oliver-Jones and Andy Shaw won the men’s scratch event.

Fiona Paton won the women’s one-mile time trial and also the hill climb, while Kieron Robbins was victorious in the men’s one-mile event and Ewen Scott in the hill climb.

An e-bike hill climb has been introduced to the club’s race programme and this was won by Keith Jones.

The club runs spin-fit classes in Golspie High School over the winter months and a programme of social rides, both on and off road, is being developed for 2023.
