East Sutherland Live Arts and Entertainment (ESLAE) is showing choreographer Christopher Wheeldon's dazzling new full-length ballet Like Water for Chocolate next week.

The event is taking place at Brora Primary School on Thursday, January 19, with doors opening at 6.45pm for a 7.15pm start.

Like Water for Chocolate is based on the 1989 bestseller by Mexican writer Laura Esquivel, which was later turned into a hit film.

A sprawling family saga, it is set in the early years of the 20th century and focuses on the forbidden love between Pedro and Tita.

The two are deeply in love but forbidden to marry as Tita, the youngest daughter, is obliged to care for her demanding mother. Pedro marries Tita’s older sister Rosaura as his best chance to stay close to his true love.

There are multiple characters and plot lines but the whole tale is glued together by kitchen recipes that acquire magical properties.

It is a story of repressed love, family discord, tortured emotions and emancipation from tradition.

A critic said: "This brilliant but convoluted story is cleverly captured across three acts peppered with references to the gastronomy which powers so much of the novel's narrative."

East Sutherland Live Arts and Entertainment is supported by the Rotary Club of East Sutherland.
