Durness mum compiles tribute book to 'practical joker' son in whose memory more than £159k has been raised for cancer charities

He was a talented musician and practical joker who died too young.

And now a touching tribute has been produced to Marty Mackay of Durness by his mother, Mary.

She has just put together a compilation of songs, stories and memories about Marty, who passed away in 2010 from renal cancer aged just 43.

She said: “Stories, Songs and Memories focuses on his love of practical jokes, but also contains songs that he composed.

“The recollections have come from a wide circle of people as well as family, and are all about remembering happy times with Marty.”

A boat builder, musician and footballer, Marty was also a firefighter and coastguard.

His memory is kept alive on the north coast through the annual Marty Mackay Memorial Fund sponsored cycle and walk in aid of cancer related charities and other good causes

To date a staggering total of £159,903 has been raised and a Trust has been set up to oversee activities.

The event was due to celebrate its 10th anniversary on April 18 this year but had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis.

Mary said: “The book was to coincide with the 10th anniversary and we decided to go ahead with it to help raise money for the charities the Trust supports.”

Stories, Songs and Memories is available at £10 from Mary on 01971 511255 or mary@mackaycountry.com
