Durness Golf Club wins major award

Members of one of Sutherland’s smallest and most remote golf clubs are celebrating after the course scooped a major award.

Durness Golf Club has been named as the best 9 hole golf course in Scotland at the Scottish Golf Tourism Awards 2024.

Head greenkeeper Alistair Morrison was presented with the award at a ceremony held at the Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre in Inverness on March 21.

He said: “This is a great achievement for the club and it was a very proud moment for me to accpet the award on behalf of our club.”

Judges looked at the course’s design and layout, condition and maintenance as well as scenic beauty and customer experience.

Durness Golf Club captain Sheila Urquhart emailed members afte the ceremony to to inform them of the achievement.

She wrote: “We have members past and present to thank for their foresight and continued dedication to providing such a magnificent golfing asset in north-west Sutherland.

“I look forward to seeing many of you on the course this coming season but be warned, this award may bring in many more golfers wanting to play the best 9 hole golf course in Scotland 2024!

Durness golf course was designed by three local golf enthusiasts - Lachie Ross, Ian Morrison and Francis Keith.

Opened in 1988, it isthe most north westerly mainland golf course in Britain and is on on the North Coast 500 tourism route.
