Drumbeg musician Rory Matheson among big band TRIP line-up for Bonar Bridge appearance

Music promoters Sutherland Sessions are hoping for a huge audience when the big band TRIP rolls into Bonar Bridge Community Hall this Saturday, November 5.
TRIP is a mighty, six-piece Glasgow-based band whose powerful, driven and distinctive sound draws on the various Celtic backgrounds of its members.
The line-up is impressive and includes a Sutherland native.
A much sought-after musician throughout Scotland and beyond, Rory Matheson, from Drumbeg in Assynt, plays piano in TRIP.
Alasdair Mackenzie, originally from Dingwall, is the unmistakable vocalist in TRIP, and also plays guitar.
Michael Biggins, from Newcastle, was last year’s BBC Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year and he plays accordion in TRIP.
All-Ireland champion Tiernan Courell is an Irish flute and whistle player from County Sligo.
Steeped in the music and culture of her native Isle of Man, Isla Callister is the first class fiddler with the band.
Craig Baxter, from Menstrie, Clackmannanshire, is the energetic and powerful bodhran player with TRIP.
He is no stranger to Sutherland Sessions, having visited on at least three previous occasions, most notably with his other band, Gnoss.
TRIP’s debut album, A Drop for Neptune, was launched at Celtic Connections earlier this year. It has been long-listed for Album of the Year at this year’s BBC ALBA Scottish Traditional Music Awards. They are set to perform at Celtic Connections again in 2023.
TRIP tasted success right from the start when they were semi-finalists in the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards in 2018.
Now, the band has performed on stages all over the UK. In addition, they have entranced global audiences at Festival Interceltique Lorient in France, Sligo Live in Ireland and Viljandi Folk Music Festival in Estonia.
In Bonar Bridge, TRIP will play tracks from A Drop for Neptune alongside brand new material.
Evanton brothers Orin and Quin Simpson are in support, playing lively traditional music on flute, accordion, guitar and bouzouki.
The event runs from 8pm-10pm, and tickets can be bought in advance here.
