Drivers are being warned not to take the Glen Loth road in an effort to bypass the site of an accident near Portgower which has closed the A9 in both directions.

The single-track Glen Loth road, which is difficult to negotiate because of its poor condition, is reported to be blocked after a car drove into a ditch.

A social media user said: “Traffic is trying to get up the very minor road over Glen Loth; please put a sign up say it is blocked! A car in a ditch apparently, and not at all surprisingly."

Another social media user posted that it looked as if the early morning crash had been "serious", and was likely that the trunk road would be closed for “hours”.

The post reads: “Going to be closed for hours. The helicopter landed early this morning. A serious collision. I wish people would drive more carefully. This is the second incident in 48 hours on the same road.”

The A9 closed at Lothmore, between Brora and Helmsdale, yesterday after two motorbikes were involved in a serious collision.
