A Dornoch grandmother’s 80th birthday was a day to remember despite her being in coronavirus lockdown.
Helen Anne Jacks had resigned herself to just another quiet day at home on Easter Sunday, April 12, after family celebrations to mark her milestone had to be cancelled because of the pandemic.
But she was surprised and overjoyed when well-wishers began ringing and more than 100 cards flooded in along with presents and floral arrangements.
It was partly due to her daughter Catherine, the town’s service point officer, who rallied friends, family and neighbours to support her mum.
The Jacks are a well known and close-knit local family with Helen Anne having worked at the local chemist's and Royal Golf Hotel before retiring. As well as Catherine, she has a son David and grandsons Ross and Kyle along with a number of nieces and nephews.
Catherine said: "She has always been the hub of our family. She treated all her nieces and nephews like her own and adores them all. Everyone’s trip to Dornoch would have to involve soup and sandwiches at Aunty Anne’s!
"We thought we would would have a big get-together for Mam's 80th, but sadly it wasn't to be. So, I thought, if Mam can't have any visitors, then I would maybe get a few friends to send her a card. Little did I know that she would be sent over 100 cards as well as flowers and presents. It was unbelievable."
Catherine, who helps her mum with medication, was able to be present on the day itself.
She said: "It was such a joy to see her laugh like she used too! Just to see her face light up with all the good wishes was great.
"She had a great day on Sunday, made all the better by all her cards, cake, phone calls, and a couple of face times too.
"We cannot thank everyone enough for making a dark day bright."
