Bookings opened on Monday, January 1, for Dornoch Fibre Fest which takes place this year over three days from Friday-Sunday, March 8-10.

The popular festival is a celebration of all things wool, yarn, fabrics and textiles, and attracts interest from across the Highlands and beyond.

Workshops, masterclasses and demonstrations take place in three venues – Dornoch Hub, Dornoch Social Club and the West Church Hall. There are also trade tables.

A masterclass in Fair Isle hat knitting was very popular at last year’s Fibre Fest.

This year’s keynote speaker has been announced as renowned Scottish artist Dr Andrew Crummy, who has designed several major community tapestries including the Great Tapestry of Scotland and the Spirit of the Highlands and Islands tapestry project.

Dr Crummy will give a talk entitled Scottish Tapestries and Beyond at the Free Church Hall on Friday, March 8, from 7.30pm.

A Fibre Fest spokesperson said: “Subject to availability we will be exhibiting some of the tapestries from The Spirit of the Highlands and Islands Tapestry. This will be on the ground floor of Dornoch Free Church. There will be no charge for the exhibition but donations to the Highland Hospice will be gratefully received.”

Organisers say they are also delighted to be offering an embroidery masterclass this year with Kirstie Campbell, one of the project leaders for the Spirit of the Highlands and Islands Tapestry. There will also be a children’s embroidery class to encourage the next generation of embroiderers.

The Fibre Fest welcomes back Jan Beadle, who will teach two weaving masterclasses and there will be a beginners, intermediates and masterclasses taught by other inspiring tutors.

A competition is held each year and for 2024, entrants are being asked to make a festival hat from recycled fabric and deliver it to the West Church Hall by noon on March 9. Competitors are being urged to “Let your inner hippie loose and have fun making wild and wacky headgear.”
