'Fit, fed sheep' commanding premium prices at Dingwall Mart

DINGWALL and Highland Marts Ltd sold 520 sheep and six prime cattle at their sale yesterday.

Prime heifers (6) averaged 253.4p per kg (+2.0p) and sold to 266.0p per kg for a 570kg Limousin cross from Dunain Mains, Inverness and £1,537.20 gross for a 610kg Limousin cross also from Dunain Mains, Inverness selling to Messrs Fraser Brothers, Butchers, Dingwall.

Heifers: Bridgend Farm, Dingwall, (LimX), 252.0p twice, 250.0p, 248.0p, Dunain Mains, (LimX), 252.0p.

Other leading prices per head:

Heifers: Dunain Mains, (LimX), £1,516.20, Bridgend Farm, (LimX), £1,461.60, £1,450.00, £1,411.20, £1,326.80.

It also sold 520 prime sheep.

New season lambs (213) averaged 220.0p (+8.6p) and sold to 247.8p per kg and £114 gross.

SQQ 25.5kg to 45.5kg (149) averaged 218.4p (+6.5p) per kg.

Feeding sheep (307) sold to £153 gross.

New season lambs (213) averaged 220.0p (+8.6p) and sold to 247.8p per kg and £114 gross for a pair of 46kg Texel Crosses from Inveruglas Farm, Kingussie selling to Messrs Fraser Brothers, Butchers, Dingwall.

SQQ 25.5kg to 45.5kg (149) averaged 218.4p (+6.5p) per kg.

Feeding sheep (307) sold to £153 gross for a Beltex Ewe from Muiryfold Farmhouse, Keith.

The verdict: “A smaller number of lambs forward were dearer and well short of buyer’s requirements. Fit, fed sheep are now commanding premium prices and despite the costs, it is benefitting to hopper lambs.Ewes met another firm enquiry and were again dearer for all classes.”
