Attractively designed, new, galavanised gates complete with a poppy decoration at their centre, have been fitted at the war memorial at Lochinver.

They replace old wooden gates which had been in place for a considerable number of years and were in need of replacement, particularly as a full restoration of the memorial was carried out four years ago with funding from the War Memorials Trust.

The new gates were designed by Durrant Macleod, secretary of the Assynt branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland (RBLS), and his wife Maysie.

Adrian Smith at Easter Ross Fabricators manufactured them, and also made a stainless steel framework for retaining wreaths in place during windy weather.

Mr Macleod said: “It was a close-run thing, but through the good offices and hard work of locals Dave Hall and Jake Pirie, the new gates were fitted in time for the Remembrance Sunday service organised by the branch on November 13.

“The gates attracted positive comments from many in the crowd of 70 plus people who attended the ceremony."

The branch are hopeful that further improvements will shortly be carried out at the memorial.

Mr Macleod said: “We understand that now the new gates are in place, it is Highland Council's intention to replace the existing and very weathered metal fencing round the memorial and park with new fencing in keeping with the new gates.”

He added: “We would like to record our thanks to Dave and Jake for stepping into the breech and fitting the new gates at short notice. We would also like to thank Adrian Smith and David MacAskill for helping out with the fitting of the stainless steel framework."
