Heavies 'meet a fierce enquiry' at Dingwall Mart at cattle and sheep sale

DINGWALL and Highland Marts Ltd yesterday sold 1137 sheep and seven cattle.

Prime bullocks averaged 294.8p per kg (N/C) and sold to 305.0p per kg and £1,967.25 gross for a 645kg British Blue cross from Brae Edge Farm, Olrig.

Prime Heifers (5) averaged 304.1p per kg (+17.3p) and sold to 321.0p per kg for a 585kg Limousin from Bridgend Farm, Dingwall selling to Messrs Fraser Brothers, Butchers, Dingwall and £2,051.90 gross for a 710kg Charollais cross also from Bridgend Farm, Dingwall.

The verdict: “A better show for quality was forward today, numbers remain tight which culminated in a decent trade across the board.”

New Season Lambs (15) averaged 300.4p per kg and sold to 311.0p per kg and £140 gross twice.

Old Season Lambs (653) averaged 277.7p per kg (+0.6p) and sold to 318.0p per kg and £155 gross.

SQQ Lambs 25.5kg to 45.5kg (434) averaged 277.7p (-1.3p).

Feeding Sheep (469) sold to £190 gross.

New Season Lambs (15) averaged 300.4p per kg and sold to 311.0p per kg and £140 gross for a pen of 45kg Suffolks from Glendonan, Knockfarrel and £140 gross for a pen of 48kg Zwartbles from Cairnhill, Farr both selling to Messrs John M Munro Ltd, Dingwall.

Old Season Lambs (653) averaged 277.7p per kg (+0.6p) and sold to 318.0p per kg for a 45kg Suffolk from Fendom Farm, Tain and £155 gross for a pen of 55.5kg Texel crosses from 5c Balnabeen, Conon Bridge.

SQQ Lambs 25.5kg to 45.5kg (434) averaged 277.0p (-1.3p).

Feeding Sheep (469) sold to £190 gross for a Roussin ram from Greenlands, Arabella.

The verdict: “The two-tiered hogg trade continues as the hopper fed sheep are achieving great returns to vendors whilst the grass fed sheep aren’t as fit and are cashing in at considerably less money in comparison.Heavies met a fierce enquiry and more of this commodity could easily have been sold. Ewes met another animated enquiry and many more could have been cashed to vendor’s advantage.”
