AN ATM cash machine is once again available in Durness.

It is the first ATM to open as part of LINK’s new pilot scheme to protect free access to cash for every high street.

Opening in the village convenience store, the cash machine will be available 24/7.

Durness is one of the first locations in the UK where LINK are commissioning a new ATM to be installed. Supported by the banks and building societies, the pilot is part of new funding to support communities across Scotland.

Cash use in Scotland is falling quickly with ATM volumes down eight per cent year-on-year across the country.

In addition to the pilot scheme, LINK recently launched a new website allowing communities to request help directly from LINK for support for free access to cash. Since launching in November, there have been more than 275 requests from Scotland.

Earlier this week, banks and building societies committed a further £4 million in additional funding for ATMs.

LINK, CEO, John Howells said: “I’m delighted the new ATM is up and running. It was not right that locals or tourists previously had to drive for an hour to get to their nearest machine. We visited Durness several times and heard from local community leaders about why the ATM is vital."

Gail Ross, MSP for Caithness, Sutherland and Ross said: “I’m delighted to see that the service has now been resumed in Durness and that this commitment has been shown to our remote rural community.

“This will have a significant impact for locals and tourists alike and I hope the positive effects of free access to cash will be felt in the local economy.”
