An organisation which hosts weekly activities in Dornoch and supports many of the town’s annual events, is in danger of collapsing, it has been revealed.

Dornoch and District Community Association (DADCA) is struggling to keep going because of a severe lack of volunteer directors.

The situation is so acute that local Highland councillor Jim McGillivray, who represents the East Sutherland and Edderton ward, was forced to step into the breach last month and take on the role of DADCA chairman.

Now Cllr McGillivray has issued an urgent plea to local people to step forward and support DADCA in order to keep it going.

DADCA runs Dornoch Social Club, which is located on School Hill and currently functions as the town’s community centre.

The club is the venue for regular weekly activities such as yoga, indoor bowling, Pilates, and dancing. It is also where an art group and a knitting group meet, as well as a cinema club, and where coffee groups, birthday parties and weddings take place.

Annual events supported by DADCA include Fireworks Night, the Hogmanay Street Party, Festival Week, community markets, flowers and fayres and Dornoch Fibre Fest.

Cllr McGillivray said: “DADCA quietly functions as the bedrock of Dornoch’s social and community life. If it collapses, nearly everyone in the town will suffer. Please volunteer to keep this hugely valuable charity going.”

DADCA next meets on Monday, October 10 at 7.30pm in the social club.
