Crofters, landowners and residents in Navidale, Marrel, West Helmsdale, Gartymore and Portgower have signalled their opposition to super pylons being sited in their area.

There was a large turn-out at a meeting last month to discuss SSEN Transmission’s proposal to run a stretch of its planned new Spittal to Beauly high-voltage line through the crofting communities.

A spokesperson said: “It was resolved that the group would present a united objection against the proposal.

“The group deplores the low-key manner in which the public’s attention has been drawn to these proposals and the lack of time given to respond. The perception is that SSEN is attempting to railroad its proposals through, armed with hints of compulsory purchase powers.”

The spokesman added that residents were concerned over the impact of the pylons on visual and aural amenity, the roads network and the value of their properties, in addition to health concerns over living next to high-voltage pylons and the impact on tourism - a major industry in the area.

The group noted appreciatively the support of Helmsdale, Brora and Golspie community councils, Timespan and Helmsdale & District Development Trust.
