PUPILS at primary schools across Sutherland are being invited to tap into their artistic talents to help protect lives on the road.

The deadline for a competition to design a road safety banner is Sunday, October 8.

School uniform specialist Recognition Express each year supports the road safety charity BRAKE by running an annual banner competition for primary school aged children from four to 11.

Youngsters are invited to submit designs for the competition based on this year’s BRAKE Road Safety Week (November 19-25) theme: 'Let’s talk about SPEED - five people die on roads every day, why do will still think it is OK to speed?'

Twelve winners across the UK will receive a full-size high-quality banner of their design to display outside their school during the long winter nights and a personalised trophy for themselves to mark their achievement.

Schools have the option to upload entries online or send them in by email, in addition to entering by post.

This campaign aims to ask why people think it is OK to speed and remind everyone just how dangerous it is to drive faster than the legal limits. It aims to hammer home the message that reducing speed saves lives.

Chris Masters, managing director of Recognition Express said: “Our design a road safety banner competition has become a fixture in the calendar of many local schools. We are always impressed by the creativity and quality of the designs sent in each year. We’ve had lots of entries so far but we’d love to see even more!

“The speed limit around schools is set at 20 miles an hour but children all too often see vehicles whizzing by far too fast. Keeping to the limit and slowing down saves lives. We’re proud to be able to do our bit to help convey this important message and at the same time continue our support for this very important charity.”
