'Competitive ringside' at Quoybrae's Caithness lamb sale

Quoybrae, Aberdeen and Northern Marts on Monday sold 4314 prime and store lambs.

In the DR Alexander & Son sponsored show and sale of ewe lambs, champion single in the half-bred section judged by Louise Coghill, Skinnet, Halkirk was from A Miller & Sons, Aimster, Thurso, which realised £440 to Cairness Ltd.

Champion pen of 20 half-bred ewe lambs and the winner of the Harry S Sleigh Perpetual Trophy for Champion Pen of Half-Bred Ewe Lambs was awarded to J Sutherland, Overton, Clyth, which realised £180 to James Stirling, Greenfield, Cuminestown.

Champion single in the North Country Cheviot section was from W Campbell, Naver House and sold for £300 to the judge.

Champion pen of 10 of North Country Cheviot ewe lambs was from A G Simpson, Cairnside which sold for £210 to Morrison & Mustard, Hillhead, Birnie.

Champion single in the any other breed section was a SufX from W&G Coghill, Balnahard, Halkirk and realised £210 to R Wilkie, Tillyboy, Echt.

Champion pen of 10 were Suffolk crosses from W&G Coghill, Balnahard and sold for £140 to R Wilkie.

H B Ewe lambs (767) averaged £155.21 (-£11.12 on the year) to £440 from Aimster, Thurso.

Chev ewe lambs (310) averaged £127.84 (+£14.57) to £300 from Naver House, Thurso.

Cross ewe lambs (397) averaged £119.43 (+£29.14) to £210 for Texel crosses from Balnahard, Harpsdale.

HB wdr lambs (71) averaged £105.43 (+£19.47) to £118 from Tain, Castletown.

Chev wdr lambs (238) averaged £69.27 (-£4.80) to £81 from Tormore, Dunbeath.

Cross lambs (2443) averaged £84.17 (+£ 3.09) to £127 for Texels from Balnahard, Harpsdale.

Prime lambs (88) averaged 250.1p per kg to 272.7p for 44kg Beltex from Hillhead, Lybster and £123 gross for 53kg Suffolks from West Watten, Lybster.

“A fantastic show of lambs were present in great bloom despite the recent wet weather. Star of the show in the half-bred ewe lamb section was firstly the champion from A Miller & Sons, Aimster, scaling £440, closely followed by third prize from J Sutherland Overton realising £420 both purchased by Cairness Ltd.

"Our judge Louise Coghill, Skinnet, backed her decision in the North Country Cheviot section when she purchased her champion single from W Campbell, Naver House, which finished up at top price for the breed at £300 closely followed by A G Simpson, Cairnside, 36 Oldhall, realising £240 for another cracker of a single ewe lamb selling to Morrison and Mustard, Hillhead.

"Cross bred lambs once again were easily cashed to a competitive ringside of buyers.”
