Sutherland councillors agree thousands of pounds of regeneration funding for community projects

Sutherland councillors have agreed to disburse around £700,000 to support projects throughout Sutherland.

Members of Sutherland County Committee at their meeting in Golspie today approved 17 applications for funding from the area's share of the Community Regeneration Fund.

The fund has a total of £768,608 to be spent in Sutherland, leaving £69,995 still to be allocated.

Committee chairman Richard Gale said all the projects were worthy and proposed that the applications be approved en masse. He was seconded by Cllr Leslie-Anne Niven, East Sutherland and Edderton.

The Assynt Foundation: £37,345 towards the upgrading and resurfacing of the single-track road leading from Lochinver to Foundation headquarters at Glencanisp Lodge.

Brora Development Trust: £13,467 to set up a visitor information point at its arts and crafts social enterprise, Otter's Couch. An information officer will be employed three days a week for a year; the development trust also succeeded in its application for £8,800 to improve the town centre by installing directional fingerposts.

Community Care Assynt : £16,500 for core staffing, to fund the centre manager for a year; £4,866 for arts and crafts activities; and £4,856 to extend its hours for use of the facility as a warm hub.

Culrain District Hall Committee: £45,000 towards the first phase of a project to refurbish the hall and build an extension.

Dornoch Area Community Interest Company:£63,986 towards its £213,986 Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) scheme; and also £4,800 towards a pilot community transport project.

Dornoch Firth Group: £8,778 to continue its counselling service for another year.

The Farr North Community Development Trust: £36,273 to purchase an electric vehicle for community transport purposes.

Go Golspie: £21,042 towards its Fountain Hall Improvement Project. A series of upgrades are planned including a new acoustic system.

Helmsdale and District Play Park Community Association: £70,000 towards the renovation of a play park.

Highland Council: £246,678 towards a £1 million project to expand the car park at Achmelvich Beach from 40 to 78 spaces, and erect a new toilet, shower block and interpretation panels.

The Kyle of Sutherland Hub: £43,300 to support its plans to extend the hub.

Lochinver Primary School: £54,000 towards its outdoor play equipment project.

Melness Crofters Estate : £18,900 to meet the costs of the first phase of its affordable housing scheme.
