Community council gets behind new Pride of Dornoch tartan

Dornoch Community Council is giving a well-known local designer its blessing to go ahead and register the name of a new tartan as Pride of Dornoch.

Yvonne Macrae who runs Tartan Creations and has an outlet in Dornoch, hopes to register a ladies’ tartan she has created with the Scottish Register of Tartans and has asked the community council for permission to use the name of the town.

However, at their meeting last week members queried whether they had the authority to give Ms Macrae the go-ahead.

Graeme Ross said: “We have no authority to give permission. The best we can say is that we have no objection. It is a place name. We cannot give authority.”

But Lucy Dickson said she did not the community council was able to stop anyone using the name Dornoch for commercial purposes.

However, treasurer Jerry Bishop said: “I believe the people who control the registration of tartans insist on permission being agreed by the local community council and I think Paddy (Patrick Murray, chairman) is allowed to write on behalf of the council to say we have no objection.”

Mr Murray said: “I think we should go ahead with it. We are relaxed about it and do not object.

Ms Macrae said the new tartan would be woven by Lochcarron of Scotland.
