Climate action group to hold public sessions in Golspie

A Highland Council commissioned climate action group are to host public sessions in Golspie to discuss flood defenses, funding, and carbon literacy training opportunities with members of the community.
The North Highland and Islands Climate Hub will host an initial public meeting within Fountain Road Hall, Golspie on Thursday July 14 from 7pm – 9pm to introduce themselves to the community.
Discussions will include recent investigations into flood defenses and to launch a new fund which community groups are encouraged to utilise.
The North Highlands and Islands Climate Hub is a new organisation which was formed when the Scottish Government called for communities to come forward to form climate hubs across the country.
Thurso Community Development Trust answered the call and funding was made available to create, manage and develop the Hub which covers the North Highlands and Islands geographical area. Once the hub was in place, it quickly became an organisation in its own right and is now the North Highlands and Islands Climate Hub.
The key aim of the group is to support climate action in communities throughout the region.
The Hub has been commissioned by Highland Council to work on community engagement on behalf of the Climate Action Coastlines Project which is part of the Green Growth Accelerator.
The upcoming public meeting will explain the Coastlines Project, the Hub’s involvement, and gather community feedback. The Coastlines Project has significant potential to unlock government funding to eradicate the flood defense and coastal erosion issues the Golspie community has been experiencing over the last several years. The goal is to identify nature-based solutions which fit the needs of the community.
The hub team will engage with specific stakeholders, community groups and affected businesses in the afternoon of Thursday July 14 in advance of the public meeting.
On Friday July 15, the hub team will be based at Fountain Road Hall from 10am – 2pm for community members, groups and businesses to drop in for further discussion about the Climate Action Coastlines Project and any other climate action work which the village is interested in executing.
The Hub has also announced the launch of a new fund of £5000, which is to be made available for applications from local groups seeking funding support for climate action projects.
The one-off Golspie Climate Action Fund is to be spent exclusively within the Golspie Community Council area.

A spokesperson for the initiative said: "The Hub team are eager to engage with the community as to how this funding is best utilised and encourage anyone interested to attend the public sessions. In addition, community groups interested in climate action are encouraged to attend to hear how the Hub team can offer carbon literacy training.
"The training supports groups to explore the possibilities of climate action within their immediate communities and provides the toolkit required to take positive action while the Golspie Climate Action Fund offers financial support to execute the identified climate action activities."
