Daniel McNeil (26) from Dumfries and Galloway started the walk, which will cover the entire UK coastline, in May 2021.

Mr McNeil chose to support charity SSAFA as they helped him after he left the army in 2017.

He said: "I got diagnosed with an auto immune disease and went downhill from there.

"I was depressed, had anxiety, suicidal thoughts and had addictions.

"I put out a cry for help on Twitter which the charity saw and got in touch with me about.

"They looked after my wellbeing and sorted out my finances. It gave me a stepping stone to heal and get better.

"One day I had a eureka moment of wanting to walk the entire UK coastline for them."

He has been doing just that ever since, swapping the 9 to 5 for "freedom".

Eleven months into his walk, he met now girlfriend Charlotte Brook (24) in Dunoon who has joined him on his travels ever since.

So far they have covered 3500 miles, and spent the winter in Orkney as Miss Brook recovered from an injury.

The pair said that the kindness they have received from stranger's has been the best part of the trip.

"The kindness has been unbelievable to be honest," Daniel said. "The people we meet offer to take our bags or give us words of support.

"Before I started this walk I lost my faith in humanity in some ways and this has just shown me there is a lot of nice people in the world.

"There is a lot of beauty around Scotland but the best thing about the whole adventure in the people."

Despite facing the mental challenge of the huge walk, they remain positive.

Miss Brook added: "When everything seems like it's falling apart, we just keep going. It will all be ok in the end, everything happens for a reason."

They have raised more than £6700 on their journey, which is expected to take around three years to complete.
