A record £16,200 has been donated to 26 local groups by St Finnbarr’s Church charities shop.

Located in a building attached to the Masonic Hall at Dornoch, the small shop has been operating for almost 40 years.

A rota of 25 enthusiastic volunteers not only man the shop but also run a themed stall at the town’s community markets and car boot sales.

A spokeswoman said: “We receive huge and generous support from donors and buyers from far and near, some of whom return year after year to look for a bargain. While our shop is small, it is packed full of interesting items.”

The shop supports a broad range of local groups including those for children, the elderly, retired service personnel and families, people with special needs and other groups which promote heritage or music as well as some with a more general purpose.

St Finbarr’s latest beneficiaries are: Alzheimer Scotland (Dornoch Dementia Cafe); Caithness and Sutherland Womens’ Aid; Care and Learning Alliance; Citizens Advice Bureau; Dornoch Academy additional support team; Dornoch Academy school library; Dornoch and District Community Association; Dornoch Beach Regeneration Improvement Group; Dornoch Brownies; Dornoch Cathedral Boy’s Brigade/Shipmates; Dornoch Firth Group; Dornoch Flowers and Fairs; Dornoch Primary School additional support team; Dornoch Youth Cafe; East Sutherland Rescue Association; Enlightening Youth Group (run by Free Church and Christian Fellowship); Friends of Oversteps; Historylinks; Lawson Cambusavie Memorial Hospital Friends; Little Lambs (Free Church playgroup); Maggies Highland; Meadows Patient’s Comfort Fund; Migdale Hospital Comfort Fund; SSAFA; Sutherland Care Forum; Support in Mind Scotland (Golspie Gatehouse); Sutherland Schools Pipe Band.
