Chance for rising young sports stars in Highlands to get slice of the action

A host of talented young athletes in the region have been lending their support to a travel award scheme helping them to compete with the world’s best.
The rising sports stars – including GB cross-country skier James Slimon from Laggan – have highlighted the benefits of the scheme helping them to access specialist training as well as taking part in national and international sporting competitions.
The Highland Athlete Travel Award Scheme is now open for 2023-2024 applications.
The scheme is administered by High Life Highland on behalf of Sportscotland and supports performance or development athletes from across the region to overcome some of the challenges they face including travel costs.
It also gives athletes access to HLH’s leisure facilities.
Slimon said: “The High Life Highland membership means I can train better in my local facilities and have money to help with travel as well as help with the costs towards my accommodation.”
Up to 14 athletes from across the Highlands will be able to receive support from HATAS.
High Life Highland’s Head of Sport Development Darren Reid commented: “The Highlands has a wealth of talented athletes competing across a number of sports at national and international level.
"For each of them, being able to perform and compete takes a supreme amount of dedication, not only from them but also their family, coaches, schools and clubs and HLH is delighted to play a small part in making this easier through this scheme.
“We are so proud of all the athletes who represent the Highlands on the national and international stage and hope the 2023 scheme will continue to support more of them to do so."
Applications for the 2023-24 Highland Athlete Travel Award Scheme must be submitted by 5pm on the 24th February.
