'Furious frenzy of bidding' leaves Dingwall sellers returning to hills with jangling pockets after record-breaking cattle sale

HISTORY-making trade at a Ross-shire auction mart was the end result of "a furious frenzy of bidding".

In an upbeat assessment after a sale of 306 store and 68 OTM cattle, Dingwall and Highland Auction Marts Ltd yesterday reported: "Another packed ringside of buyers were out in force and participated in a furious frenzy of bidding which culminated in the dearest trade ever in the history of Dingwall Mart.

"Every vendor returned to the hill with not only smiles on their faces but also a cheque in their pockets the weight of a breeze block! All shapes and sizes were keenly bid for with many a potential purchaser returning to their bunkers empty-handed.Needless to say so many more could easily have been sold."

Bullocks (129) averaged 306.5p and sold to 387.2p per kg for a 235kg Limousin from Tigh Airigh, Blarmachfoldach and £1,760 gross for a 713kg Beef Shorthorn cross from Allanglach, North Kessock.

Heifers (167) averaged 298.3p and sold to 390.0p per kg for a 277kg Limousin cross from 1 East Murkle Farm Cottage £1,750 gross for a 515kg Limousin cross from The Dell of Killiehuntly, Kingussie.

Young Bulls (10) sold to 285.2p per kg for a 270kg Aberdeen Angus cross from Mucomir Farm, Spean Bridge and £1300 gross for a 500kg Luing cross from Hartmount Holdings, Lamington.

OTM prime &feeding bulls (6) sold to 216.5p per kg and £2,500 gross for a Limousin from Croick Estate.

The verdict: “The heavy artillery continued in the cast cow ring as another epic trade was witnessed. Meat was once again in short supply and yet again many a potential feeding cow is going into the killing pen to fill this void.”
