On day two of the 2022 Cape Wrath Ultra, 268 runners headed into Knoydart, a place widely cited to be the last true wilderness in the UK, as they tackled 54.1km of wild, rough terrain. Wet weather in the morning cleared up in the afternoon, revealing the spectacular scenery of the sea lochs and the mountains as the competitors made their way towards Kinloch Hourn.

Simon Roberts retained his overall lead and was first man on the day, but also sustained a knee injury on the course and spent time in the medical tent when he got into camp.

Laura O’Driscoll also stayed out in front in the women’s race and looked strong as she negotiated a particularly tricky muddy descent.

She said: “That’s a tough day – a lot tougher than the prologue. I’m not too bad. My toes are a bit sore, but you can’t really move that fast through the bogs, so hopefully that will help my legs.”

After day two of the 2022 Cape Wrath Ultra, the leading runners are:

Male

1st Simon Roberts (10:21:26)

2nd Graham Walton (10:56:34)

3rd Thomas Øderud (11:08:56)

Female

1st Laura O’Driscoll (11:16:51)

2nd Despina Berdeni (11:46:35)

3rd Vicky Savage (13:06:57).

A round up of the day’s action is available on the event website - Day two: into the wilderness — Cape Wrath Ultra®.

Day three has begun and is set to be one of the toughest of the race, challenging runners with 68km and over 2300m of ascent from Kinloch Hourn to Achnashellach.
