Cairngorm Mountain 'fourth best' resort in Scotland

As it struggles with the problems of its much-troubled funicular railway, Cairngorm Mountain has emerged in a new study as a mere fourth place destination on the list of Scottish resorts.

The World Skiing Index, conducted by the team at Blacks – which has a store in Aviemore – looked at factors such as the total length of slopes and the cost of an adult day pass the create a 'Ski resort score'.

They then ranked the ski resorts to reveal the best resorts to visit without leaving the UK

The list of the UK’s best ski resorts and centres puts Glenshee at the top, with an overall score of 9.61/10:

"Located in the southern end of the Cairngorms National Park, Glenshee is the largest ski resort in the UK, boasting 40km of ski slopes which are serviced by 21 ski lifts. An adult day pass at Glenshee costs €39/£34."

Tied for second place are Glencoe Mountain and The Lecht.

"Located in the West Highlands, approximately 22 minutes drive from the town of Glencoe, the Glencoe Mountain ski resort provides access to 24.3km of ski slopes with 9 ski lifts in operation. An adult day pass at the resort costs €41/£35.

"Also finishing in second place with a score of 8.55/10 is the Lecht ski resort. The resort is located in the north-eastern area of the Cairngorms National Park, about a 90-minute drive West of Aberdeen.

"The Lecht has 18km of ski slopes for visitors to enjoy, serviced by 13 ski lifts. An adult day pass at the resort costs €41/£35."

Cairngorm Mountain's ranking is listed as having 32km of slopes, serviced by 11 ski lifts at the cost of £38 for an adult day pass. It scored just 8.42.

In fifth came the Nevis Range, which scored 8.16.

The study also revealed that the best ski resort worldwide is Les 3 Vallees, in south-eastern France.

The best resort for “Apres-ski” is KitzSki in Austria, which has 62 mountain restaurants and ski huts.

The most popular ski resort on Instagram is La Plagne in France, with 102,931 posts. The ski resort is very popular among British skiers and is a common choice for families.
