The Kyle of Sutherland Apprenticeship Scheme has opened for new applications from businesses within the community council areas of Lairg, Creich, and Ardgay and district.

The initiative, funded by the Achany Wind Farm Community Investment Fund and coordinated by Lairg and District Learning Centre, has supported more than 27 apprentices through 19 businesses since 2010.

Apprenticeships have varied from traditional trades such as joinery, plumbing and bricklaying through to butchery to modern and innovative apprentices such as horse management.

A spokesman for the scheme said: “Our ethos is to support local businesses in employing local young people, keeping them in their own communities while they gain both experience and qualifications.”

The scheme has supported James Lockhart, owner of A&D Lockhart Joinery, Lairg, to take on four apprentices. His newest apprentice is also undertaking an HNC in construction management with support from the scheme.

He said: “Small communities need these opportunities to encourage young people to stay in the area. Even if young people do move away after their apprenticeship, they might return home in the future, possibly with family and to start their own business.”
