Burns supper at Brora Scout and Guide Hall 'extra special'

The Burns Supper at the Brora Scout and Guide Hall last Saturday was a very special one, according to Nick Lindsay, who chaired the event.

In his welcome address to the assembled guests, Dr Lindsay, a local historian, said that the event marked one of two very significant milestones in the history of Brora this year.

“Firstly this Burns supper has been run every year since 1998, but of course, could not be held for two years during COVID in 2021 or 2022,” he said. “That makes this a very special 25th occasion and I welcome you all to this auspicious evening.

“Secondly this year also marks the 100 years of Scouting in Brora, the troop having been reformed after World War I in March 1924 by Alexander Sutherland or ‘Pard’ as he was generally known and GN Murray.”

Dr Lindsay went on to give some facts about Robert Burns, pointing out that this year marks the 265th anniversary of the birth of Scotland’s National Bard.

He then paid tribute to the hard-working committee responsible for the event, headed by Davie and Margaret MacDonald, and thanked the volunteer kitchen staff, waiting staff and front of house manager, Brian Sinclair.

“The committee, as ever, have been working tirelessly in the months leading up to tonight’s occasion and absolutely no expense has been spared in assembling the array of Brora’s Got Talent you see sitting at our top table tonight,” he said.

A selection of Burns music was played by Hamish Polson before Dr Lindsay gave the Selkirk Grace.

Chef Colin Howell, carrying the haggis on a silver platter, was piped in by Malcolm Paton. Jimmy MacDonald gave a “resounding and animated recital of the Address to a Haggis and sang Caledonia and Red Red Rose.

Following the traditional meal John Mackay delivered the Immortal Memory, Ron Munro gave the Toast to the Lassies and Allena Macleod gave the Reply from the Lassies. Guests then enjoyed a ceilidh.
