A POPULAR festival that drew visitors to a Sutherland village has been cancelled.

Organisers of Brora’s annual scarecrow festival have announced on social media that it will not go ahead this year.

The overall winner of Brora Scarecrow Festival 2019 was Peter Rabbit and Mr McGregor's Garden by floral group Brighter Brora.

A statement posted on the site reads: “After much discussion we have decided not to have a scarecrow festival this year.

“We are a very small committee and we are unable to give the time to organising the festival this year.

“Sorry for any disappointment and hope you understand.”

Brora Community Events Group organised the first, week-long scarecrow festival in August 2015.

The idea caught on and around 90 scarecrows were exhibited at homes and businesses throughout the village.

Social media users have posted their disappointment at the cancellation but said they recognised the amount of work involved.

Elinor Sim posted: “Totally understand, its a lot of work for a small group. Hopefully we’ll see you back again.”

And Laura Haddow wrote: “That’s a pity, maybe next year if circumstances changes. Thanks for all the time and effort put in to previous years.”
