A Sutherland garage has had to close its doors after one of its workers contracted coronavirus.

The workshop and office at the Sutherland Arms in Brora shut down last Friday, although the filling station and garage forecourt remains open for business.

Officers from the government’s Test and Protect service have given assurances there is little risk to filling station workers or customers.

At the start of the coronavirus pandemic, screens were erected at the filling station till and crossover between departments was restricted.

Garage manager Catriona MacQueen said the five garage and administration workers were now self-isolating and the business was not due to reopen until Wednesday, December 2.

Tests on the other workers have come back negative.

“Our top priority is the welfare of our customers. Many of them are elderly and we would never do anything to harm them,” said Mrs MacQueen. “Public health and the safety of the community has to come before pounds.”

“Test and Protect said to us that we shut so quickly that it went a long way to minimising the risk.”

The worker who contracted coronavirus was suffering from headaches but did not have the high temperature or cough indicative of the illness.

However a warning flag went up when he suddenly lost his sense of smell. He went for a test which proved positive.

“He messaged me after losing his sense of smell,” said Mrs MacQueen. “And that's when we closed the garage. “He had none of the symptoms that we are told to look out for. He just thought he had a sore head and that was it.

“He had not been further afield than the village so where it came from, who knows.”

Mrs MacQueen has thanked customers for their understanding and messages of support

The garage’s quick action in shutting its doors has been praised by local residents and groups.

Golspie Community Council posting on Facebook: “Golspie Community Council would like to commend Sutherland Arms Garage and thank them for their swift action this week.

“Their quick and responsible response will go a long way towards protecting our communities. What they have done in a situation that no-one wants to face, is an example to us all. Thank you. Our best wishes go to all those affected."

Kirsty Bouge posted: “Well done for being open and honest with everyone. I wish all affected a safe, speedy recovery.”

Tracy Sutherland wrote: “It can happen to anyone, the most important thing is you are following guidelines.”

Archie Paterson posted: “All you are doing is very sensible. It is really good that a local business is seen to be acting in such a responsible manner.”
