A FOOD SHARE service operating in Brora is being expanded, it has been announced.

Currently free food – much of it surplus items donated by a local supermarket - can be accessed at the busy Food Share Shed, located next to the Brora Village Hub on the north side of the village.

The shed was set up by community interest company Engaging with Activity (EWA), with the support of an active group of volunteers.

And now EWA, which also runs the hub, has joined with Brora Development Trust and Brora Community Centre to establish a Food Share Shed Annex at the community centre – located behind Brora Primary School.

The annex is being hosted by the community centre and operated by EWA. Local volunteers again helped set it up.

It will be stocked with in-date supermarket surplus food, private donations and goods from Cfine – a charity which redistributes surplus food to community groups through the Fare Share scheme.

Brora Development Trust development officer Sarah Morrison said: “In common with food share facilities across the country, the shed has faced challenges with an increase in demand as a result of the high cost of living coupled with a reduction in surplus food available from supermarkets.

“In response to this Brora Development Trust has secured funding from Highland Council’s Cost of Living Support Fund which will allow surplus stock for the annex to be purchased, to top up stocks and meet local demand.”

The Food Share Shed Annex will be open from Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm.

The community centre provides internet hotspot facility every Tuesday and Friday between 9am and 4pm with hot and cold drinks and snacks available at no charge.

The centre also runs a number of activities and is available for people wishing to hire its facilities.
