A NEW visitor information point is set to be established in a central location at Brora.

The move by Brora Development Trust follows a successful funding application to the Community Regeneration Fund – administered by Highland Council – with match funding from the Development Trusts Association Scotland.

A new job has also been created for an information officer to staff the visitor information point three days a week for 12 months.

The new facility is being set up in the trust’s arts and crafts social enterprise, the Otter’s Couch. Run as a not for profit initiative, the Otter’s Couch provides earning opportunities for more than 40 local artists and crafters.

Trust development officer Sarah Morrison said: “The new visitor information point will provide information to visitors about where to stay, eat and visit, and what to do in the area.

“The aim is to encourage visitors to spend more time in and around Brora and to recommend the village as a destination to friends and family.”

The visitor information point will also provide local businesses with promotional and marketing opportunities.

“The trust has invited local businesses with an interest in tourism to be part of its working group to guide this and future tourism related initiatives the trust is involved with,” said Ms Morrison

“Anyone living in Brora and district who is interested in participating in this group is urged to get in contact with Brora Development Trust.”

The trust is also set to install directional pedestrian fingerposts for the village centre after a further application to the Community Regeneration Fund was also granted, with the Development Trusts Association Scotland again giving match funding.

Ms Morrison said: “The signage will serve to guide visitors to key points in Brora and encourage pedestrians to move through and around the village.”

She added that both the visitor information point and improvements to signage were ways in which the trust was actively helping to support local businesses and the local economy.

Sutherland County Committee considered applications to the Community Regeneration Fund at its last meeting.
